Corporate Profile
Magnetica Company Background
Magnetica’s technical competencies and its proprietary intellectual property are based on outcomes from over 15 years of world class research and development at the University of Queensland (UQ) principally at the Centre for Magnetic Resonance (CMR) which has over 65 staff and the most comprehensive magnetic resonance equipment and infrastructure in Australia. Magnetica brings together the experience, industry knowledge and contacts required to produce superconducting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnets. Its leading edge competitive capabilities are enhanced by its alliance with Japan Superconductor Technology, Inc (JASTEC), an international developer and manufacturer of NMR magnets.
What is MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive method which utilizes the properties of magnetism to create nondestructive, three-dimensional, internal images of the soft tissues of the body, including the brain, spinal cord and muscle. With this technology, images of the body are created using magnetic rather than x-ray energy.
It is non-interventional, has a high resolution image quality and is cost-effective for new procedures. It can be applied to more traditional imaging as well as new areas such as angiography, functional MRI and more interventional procedures.
In 2002, 22 million MRI procedures were performed in the US alone, an increase of 18% on the previous year.
